Legal & General business protection review
Legal & General has been protecting families for over 185 years and is one of the UK’s best-known protection brands. This is our independent review of its business protection range.
Who is Legal & General?
Legal & General offers one of the broadest business protection ranges: relevant life, key person, income protection, critical illness, business loan and shareholder protection, executive income protection, and group life, income protection and critical illness schemes. Cover can be life only or life with critical illness. In 2024 it paid 97% of life claims. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change.
The scale behind it is significant. In 2025 Legal & General paid £1.388 billion across more than 26,000 protection claims, averaging £2.7 million every day in retail claims alone, and its retail business serves 12.1 million UK customers. Protection policies also come with phone-based wellbeing services at no extra cost, including mental health support provided via RedArc.
What business protection products does Legal & General offer?
Legal & General covers the full spread of protection, from company-paid cover for directors, to personal policies, to group schemes for a whole team, and it is one of the few insurers on our panel with a dedicated executive income protection plan. Filter the range or swipe through the cards.

Ask an adviser →How reliable is Legal & General at paying claims?
Legal & General paid 97.5% of life insurance claims in 2025, covering almost 14,000 life and over 50s payouts worth £527 million, with an average payout of £37,788. It paid 92.9% of critical illness claims, worth £291 million across 4,051 claims, and 94.8% of terminal illness claims, totalling £161 million.
Across retail and group protection combined, Legal & General paid £1.388 billion over more than 26,000 claims in 2025, averaging 56 retail claims and £2.7 million a day, and it has paid £4.6 billion in claims over the last five years. On the group side, 1,413 group life claims were paid totalling £284 million, at an average of £201,032 per claim.
A strong claims record is reassuring context, not a guarantee. Every claim is assessed against the policy terms, and the most common reason claims are declined across the industry is inaccurate health or lifestyle information given at application.

What wellbeing support comes with Legal & General policies?
Legal & General protection policies include phone-based wellbeing services at no extra cost, available from day one of the policy. It’s a smaller set than some app-based packages, but the support is practical and human, delivered by specialist nurses and care experts.
Wellbeing extras are non-contractual benefits Legal & General can change or withdraw, and eligibility conditions may apply. They shouldn’t be the main reason for taking out a policy.
Who might Legal & General suit?
There’s no single best insurer, only the best fit for your business. Here’s how Legal & General tends to stack up.
Legal & General may appeal if you
- Need a dedicated executive income protection plan, which few insurers offer as a separate product
- Want one of the broadest ranges on our panel, spanning director, personal and group cover
- Value a long track record and a published claims history, with 97.5% of life claims paid in 2025
Worth comparing others if you
- Want app-based wellbeing extras such as a 24/7 digital GP, which some insurers include
- Are buying mainly on price, since premiums vary by provider and your circumstances
- Need cover beyond the maximum ages on a specific product, such as critical illness ending before age 75
An adviser can check your demands and needs across the whole panel before you decide anything.

Important information
- This page is information only and not personal advice. Whether a product or provider is right for you depends on your circumstances. Speak to one of our advisers to find out what suits your business.
- IGotCover is a trading name of Caspian Assured, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA reference 788964). We arrange cover; the insurer provides it. We compare products from a selected panel of providers, not the whole market.
- Cover is subject to the provider’s terms, underwriting, medical history and acceptance, and to a successful claim. Policies carry exclusions and conditions. Relevant Life Insurance is written in trust and has no cash-in value.
- Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change, and any tax efficiency is not guaranteed.
- Provider figures, claims rates and independent ratings are taken from provider and third-party sources and were correct at the time of writing. Ratings measure different things: a Trustpilot score may cover a provider’s whole group rather than one product, and Defaqto rates product features rather than service, so check the basis of each.
- Wellbeing extras are non-contractual benefits the provider can change or withdraw, may have eligibility or residency conditions, and some elements (such as a health check) may carry a charge. They should not be the main reason for taking out a policy.
